The challenge

The biggest challenge in developing a mobile app and dedicated website is to avoid errors. The user should be able to save and edit every intermediate step of the input at any time. Consistency and standards should also be relevant, so UI elements like icons, scrollbars, buttons and all graphical objects should be used steadily so that the design feels familiar to the user.

The solution

There is currently no organization that supports the user in exploring new career paths. On this portal, the user can find all the options for a career change. Whether a course of study or further training based on a program is sufficient depends on the individual's background. I strive to create an optimal career path with the app.

PERSONA

Zoe is a technical business analyst who needs a change of scenery because she enjoys working with children and would like to integrate this into her work environment.

The impact & what I learned

A competitive audit was conducted to gather information. In addition, a web analysis was consulted, and international and regional competitors were compared. User problems were taken into account and solutions were integrated into the design. In addition, a web analysis was conducted and evaluated.

I learned that an outstanding app with a lot of text content can include a beautiful user interface, fantastic simplicity and easy navigation. This is exactly where creating the information architecture and wireframes was hugely important.

USER JOURNEY MAP

Zoe's user journey shows the user flow from inputting personal information and uploading professional documents to the desired prospective career path.

REFINING THE DESIGN
PAPER & DIGITAL WIREFRAMES

Here the main layout is created as I imagine the low-detail final product in a few screens. The digital wireframe shows limited functionality as first, as my initial task is to define the layout. It shows the entry app and the main flow for browsing and clicking on the program that users might consider for a career change.

Project Background

I am designing a mobile app and dedicated website to help users prepare for a job transition. The main user experience begins on the app with entering personal and professional information. Then, the user is able to search for other career opportunities or further education, with additional qualifications.

Themes

A NAVIGATION

Most users were wondering, if they can update their profile with latest career steps.

B RECOMMENDATIONS

7 of 20 Participants wanted a new career change, but with the same expertise that already exists.

C ICON

12 of 20 Participants had difficulties to find the arrow element as it overlays text fields.

Insights & recommendations

A navigation bar was added to provide a natural place to display a screen, it helps users to orient themselves the app and it can include controls that affect the screen’s content.

I added a click symbol under the search bar, so users can  explore new careers without further qualifications.

An Arrow symbol has been moved to the top left for a better page layout.
